Exploring York – What to see!

Hey guys!

I am currently on holiday at the moment. I am spending a week away with the family in a lovely cottage in Yorkshire, with no one around us! Very peaceful and relaxing. Just what I need!! Whilst here, it only seemed fitting to head into York city and explore what it has to offer.

York is a beautiful, fun city with a lot of history, and with many things to do there, you will never get bored!

So where should you go and visit?

  • York Minster

York Minster is a beautiful cathedral, filled with rich history, and it is a photographers dream. You do have to pay to go inside, but even just staying outside is wonderful. The detail on this building is fabulous!

Whether you go inside or not, the Minster is a great place to visit when in York. York Castle is also a great place to visit if you are in the area. I did not go this time, but it is great to see, especially if you are a fan of history.

  • The shambles

The Shambles is a fantastic little street that allows you to get a sense of the olden days. With small, old buildings and narrow streets, you are able to step back in time and explore the wonders of old York. Today, The Shambles has a variety of shops, so there is definitely something for everyone! The unique stores are small and breathtaking. From the homemade fudge shops (May have spent quite a lot of money on fudge), to the Harry Potter shops (I was in love), and the homemade bread shop!! This street allows for a magical feeling. It is lovely walking down it!

  • Christmas market

With the Christmas decorations going up, and the Christmas shops opening, it is a wonderful time of year to visit. Unfortunately, the Christmas Markets were not open (open 15th November) when I went, and they were just setting the stalls up. If you do go at Christmas time, then I know it will be a very pretty sight! With cute streets and buildings everywhere you turn, York is a fantastic day out for the family. It is a beautiful city, and not too big, so you can walk to most places which is a bonus! There are many cafes and restaurants that you can visit, with some of them based within the old buildings which give it that special touch.

  • The York Dungeon

Due to York’s history, there is no wonder there are many haunted stories! The York Dungeons are also a must if you like live horror! This place terrifies me, but yet I always end up going back! A definite must if you are up for a laugh and scare! Just make sure to book tickets, as it can get very busy; especially in the school holidays!! If this is too scary, then make sure to check out the ghost tours of the city.

Have you ever visited York before? What is your favourite thing to do?
